I really don't think you can come close to the cost to performance ratio of a 300+ WHP MR2 Spyder in any other model unless someone you know dies and leaves your their elise, and even then you don't have a car thats all comfortable on a daily basis. AND you can make it lighter - people have seen under 2000 if they try hard. My thinking is this: No-one sells a new sub 2300 lb. You would think building as many as we do I would get tired of them, but I really get more and more enthusiastic about them the further we push the limits. That said - I have a passion for MR2s and specifically for spyders. I love the car and I bought mine the day it came out. I have been VERY aware that it was going to be the next big thing in Japanese sports cars since I drove my first one back in April of 2012. We have multiple development projects going for it right now. We have been developing parts and working on FR-S / BRZ platform cars since they came out. I am not looking for general business advice per-se. Maybe you could produce a Hi-flow cat similar to the JNZ as an option to go with it. I hope you keep your swap header available. I hope you will keep doing your thing with the MR2 Spyder and expand into the FR-S market to grow your business. Like everyone else said, from a business standpoint the FR-S/BRZ is where it is at but there is already a lot of companies making performance parts for those cars. Also once you do a 2ZZ swap you are pretty well set and do not need additional parts which leaves DDPR with a dwindling market. However, many do the swaps themselves and there are several sources for the swap parts. It seems like almost every day someone is posting on here about doing the swap. I do not think that the 2ZZ swap market is drying up. I do not like Chevy engines in Fords either. I am not a fan of the K swap because of my purist way of thinking. It just does not make sense for most people to throw that kind of money away on a 9-15 year old car with no hope of recouping any of it. If I was going to replace my 2ZZ then that is the way I would go but $15K is more than the value of most if not all MR2 Spyders. I rode in cyclehead's 2GR swapped car and it is awesome even in basically "stock" form. I just don't know that there is an actual market for it. My personal inclination is to do the 2GR because I like the idea of having one in my spyder even at stock power levels, and I like the idea of building one, slapping a couple turbos on it and doing obnoxiously silly things in the car. So this is the deal - I ask for no commitments from anyone, but knowing what the total costs will be, would any of you be willing to pay $15K+ for a high quality swap to either of these powertrains in the future? I know there is a lot of "interest" in the K series, but so far everyone that has contacted us about them has been either under funded, or unrealistic about what they are looking at to get a full function swap done. 2ZZ swaps seem to be tapering off, and I don't want to waste time and money developing an answer to a question no-one is asking. Is it worth our time to pursue either of these, or should I be focusing more on FRS. So the question I have for the community is this: Both will require similar work to a full swap sorted for them. K series has a lot of aftermarket support for it and is lighter than the 2GR. 2GR comes with great torque and HP out of the box and great reliability. Both of them look like they will easily cost over $15,000. This would be an all gauges working, AC working, works like it is supposed from the factory type swap. So we're at a point where I feel like I finally have the time and money to throw into developing a turnkey swap like we offer for the 2ZZ for either the K24 or the 2GR.
